Atoms

Who were the main characters?

The main characters in the development started with Democritious who came up with the theory that all matter was composed of particles and they cannot be cut. No one challenged the theory until the late 1600's when scientists has specific instruments to use in this experiment. After Democritious, Robert Boyle stated that matter was composed of small particles and not four elements. But the one to experiment and prove the existence of the atom was John Dalton. Dalton was the first to actually perform experiments using atomic weight.

Why were they vital?

All these people were vital to the development of the atom because without Democritious, John Dalton wouldn't have tested his theory to prove it. They were all similar except for the fact that John Dalton actually tested the proof of an atom. Without the knowledge of the atom, we wouldn't know anything about how our world is made up.

What made them different?

They all used different materials when experimenting & it seems to me that they all had different purposes for discovering the atom.

Think about your lessons in history and discuss how the time period that they lived in determined the outcome of their discovery/ or how it influenced those individuals to be the names that we know today (aka did it matter where they grew up or if they had money?)

Back when the lived, they didn't have the right equipment to test the atom theory properly. This was an important discovery because it helped learn the history of the world with knowing what things are made up of.

Why do we consider the atomic theory still a theory? What are the new developments- would love for you to share new sources here about what you find

The atomic theory is still a theory because it continues to change over the years and people begin to find more facts about the atom.

- Why does it matter that we understand the structure of the atom?

When we understand the structure of the atom, we can finally prove the atomic theory and we can continue to find new discovers in ourselves, science, & improve our knowledge on all things.
